book review: The Host

Stephenie Meyer is not what some would call a great writer. I think she's great but thats probably because I'm in love with her. She is an entertaining writer and that is what I enjoy. I don't read (usually) to broaden my understanding or necessarily learn something. I want to be taken out of my day and not think about life for just a minute. Meyer does that. In fact, Meyer has me wrapped around her literary finger with Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse.

Host on the other hand wasn't that way for me. Don't get me wrong...I read it...in basically 5 days. 600+ book in five days! What did I think? Well....I liked it. Yeah, I liked it. I'm admitting it to my self and all of Cyber Space (I almost said CyberSource, how pathetic). I liked it...but...it wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting Twilight "Adult" style. Obviously not with all of the adult content (Stephenie doesn't do that guys), but you know, with more depth. I'll give it that it wasn't a young readers novel. It was complex. It was down right difficult to understand in some parts. But it was no Twilight. Here's my take on it.

Pro's:
  • Entertaining. It basically occupied a small part of my brain for nearly a week. That was a relief when I was stressed and needed something to think about.
  • Long. I actually really like long novels. As Time magazine said about Meyer, (I'm paraphrasing because I'm too lazy to go get the magazine, find it, and type and source it), "Whereas Rowling meticulously writes each sentence, Meyer floods the page with words. She'll never use a sentence when she can explain it in a paragraph." That is a true statement. And I like that. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, but those are long too.
  • Interesting. The storyline isn't what most Sci-Fi stories are. It was different, refreshing, Um...captivating.
  • Predictable, but...not. I thought I had it guessed what was going to happen. I was close, but she threw in some kinks. I like that.
Con's
  • Creepy. It creeped me out every once in awhile. Weird stuff like the alien telling the humans brother something that the human just said in her mind. I don't know how to explain it, but it was a little strange. Basically the plot was creepy... an alien takes over someones body and they both are in love with the same guy. Ok, just thinking of an alien taking over my mind creeps me out.
  • Unnatural. Don't get me wrong, vampires and werewolves aren't natural. However, they seem that way in the Twilight series. This book didn't make me want to be there, and it didn't make me want to experience what was happening in the book.
  • Sad. There were quite a few sad parts in the book. Aliens taking over the world, only a few humans left. SAD!
Well thats my sad attempt at a book review. Would I recommend it? ...um Yes. but not to everyone. I think if you love the Twilight series then you'll like this one. Good luck! Tell me how it goes.

Rachael Rating: B-
Book Rating: PG-13 for a few explatives here and there (nothing bad), a couple juicy make-out scenes (no sex or book porn in the slightest), and basically because it might scare kids a little bit.
